link on the home page to learn how to submit a preliminary project
description for a Professional Development, Research and Education
or Agroecosystems grant.
To be eligible for 2010 funds, you must complete an online pre-proposal
by July 31, 2009. Only applicants with a full proposal in October.

USDA Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Training Program

Recent contamination outbreaks for tomatoes and spinach have raised concerns
about the safety of fresh produce. UNH Cooperative Extension and the NH Department
of Agriculture, Markets & Food
have teamed up with partners to implement a USDA Good Agricultural Practices
(GAP) Training Program for growers and other fresh produce handlers.
At the training, you will learn more about:
the costs and impact of diseases and outbreaks caused by foodborne
pathogens
• strategies for controlling potential microbial food safety hazards
before planting and throughout all phases of production planting,
production, harvesting and postharvest handling
the USDA Third Party Audit process
You will also:
receive a manual filled with GAP resources
• receive a CD loaded with templates needed to maintain records to verify USDA
GAP that can be customized for your farm
Featured Speaker: Rich Bonanno, Ph.D. is an Extension Educator with UMass Extension
and is a co-Principal Investigator on the UMass GAP project. He is also responsible
for weed management in vegetable and small fruit crops. Rich serves as a Public
Member to the Massachusetts Pesticide Control Board and is a Past-president
of the New England Vegetable & Berry
Grower's Association.
Dick Uncles is Director of the Division of Regulatory Services, New Hampshire
Department of Agriculture, Markets and Food.
Juli Brussell is Program Leader for Agricultural Resources, University of New
Hampshire Cooperative Extension.

Carroll County Open Farm Tour

The Carroll County Farm Bureau will be hosting an Open Farm Twilight
Tour on three farms in Carroll County on Tuesday July 21, 2009 from
5pm to 8pm. The purpose of the tours is to promote Agriculture in Carroll
County. Although Carroll County has a number of working farms that
range from Horticulture, Forestry, Orchards, Beef and Dairy, Goat and
Sheep the three farms that will share their expertise on this particular

Top of The Hill Farm raises Reg. Polled Hereford Cattle where they
market breeding stock show heifers and freezer beef, at this time there
is 31 head of cattle on the farm. The farm maintains approximately
45 acres of pasture and hay land. Two acres of vegetable gardens and
cut flowers are made available at the Wolfeboro Farmers Market. Approximately
65 acres of managed forest land is operated by Alan, Carolyn, Erik
and Anna-Fredrickson

Iron Brook Farm is an established Equine Boarding and Riding facility
conducting lessons in English, Saddle Seat and Western. Iron Brook
Farm has shown at the National, State and Regional level and continues
to promote in many Open Horse Show Competitions. In addition to horses
Iron Brook Farm also has sheep, chickens and Beef Cows on their family

Oxen for Beginners

This 2 day workshop (8/1-8/2/09) will include choosing
a team and halter training, how to yoke, health and nutrition, hooking
to equipment, driving teams for work and show. Instructors are: Tim
Huppe, Farm Manager of Sanborn Mills Farm and owner of Berry Brook
Farm and Ox Supply in Farmington, New Hampshire, and Dr. Drew Conroy,
Professor of Applied Animal Science at the University of New Hampshire
and owner of Oxwood Farm in Berwick, Maine and author of The Oxen Handbook.
Accommodations (bed and shared bath) are $30 per night extra (either
the Main House or the Red House) and are limited to 14 people, so it’s
important to let us know if you want to stay on site. Other alternatives
include bringing your own camper or staying at a local hotel or B&B.
